Scott's Bluff NM & Toadstool State Park....30th Sept & 1st Oct..

Scott's Bluff National Monument....
After a hiccup with the tyre episode on Thursday, yesterday was as they say another day and a very good one with a visit from "camping" friends Wally & Carole who had driven from Grand Lake Colorado (280 miles) to see us....we did feed them before they headed back !!
This is the view from the parking area at the top of Scott's Bluff and a view like this and a beautiful day has to gladden the heart....We will hike up here to the top in a few days time...
Late flowering miniature sunflowers....
This area of Nebraska is renowned  for the historic trails.....Oregon, Mormon and California Trails all passed through this region and valley...
A half mile paved walk along the Oregon Trail...
A view of the valley and marker bluffs followed by the early settlers...
Part of the bluff showing one of the 3 road tunnels.
Visitors wanted to be able to get to the top of the bluff by car hence a road was built by the Civilian Conservation Crops 1932-37....
This and next pic show the grassy plains between the bluffs...
The metal survey post at the summit of Scott's Bluff was level with the rock face in 1933...the sandstone is gradually being eroded....

Next was a drive to Chimney Rock 20 miles east of Scott's Bluff and another of the iconic landmarks on the Oregon, Mormon and Californian Trails...
Back home and a good day discovering information about this historic area....
Sunday 1st October and today we head north for 100 miles to Toadstool State Park...
The Crawford Visitor Centre a few miles from Toadstool and time for coffee and cookies...
Toadstool State Park is reached from Crawford via a 15 mile dirt road....
Oyster shell rock formations...
Amazing shapes created by wind and weather....
There is a very chilly wind today but it's good to get out and walk the 1.6 mile hike...
Apart from the lack of "colour" this area is very reminiscent of the Painted desert....
A long drive to get here but worth it....
The more observant among you will notice the railroad/train in the background...
Caption for this photo...Fungi Growning On Trees...
Back to Crawford after our lunch sandwich and 3 miles on to Fort Robinson....
Fort Robinson was a major army post until after WW11. It is now a state park and equestrian centre with many of the old barracks and officers quarters being used for accommodation for tourists...
We couldn't see inside the buildings as they are mostly closed for the season....
A double whammy....I know how many of you love water-towers !!!!!
Many of the buildings are Victorian style much as we have in any of our military towns...
And back home and oh my those clouds are dark !!! Glad we are now tucked up warm in our home on wheels...
It was a long drive but we had a very good day and we certainly saw a lot of the Nebraskan Countryside...
We are loving this RV Park, very peaceful and spacious....
More soon from the Cornhuskers State...

  1. Hi Sue & Michael,
Glad to hear that things are now going smoothly.
A few more rock pictures for the rock room.
Weather here not bad for time of year, little breezy today(Tuesday 10th) , forecast for later in week bright and 17 degrees. Which is great as we are off to Fowey Cornwall for a weeks break on Friday.
Keep up the nightcaps to keep chill at bay.
    Enjoy.

  2. Hi Both, another batch of impressive photos - but no cowboys. All well here though increasingly autumnal, having had that dose of sunshine three weeks ago we are missing the warmth. AGM at GC this Friday, then Captains Dinner on Saturday - Maxine God Bless here is tagging along whist I do my duty and attend. Off to Devon next weekend though so will make it up to her then. Take care A&M
